History of the Gottifredi Maffioli brand

The story of Gottifredi Maffioli is a story of innovation and research. The constant innovation and challenges that the company faced and won made Gottifredi Maffioli a landmark for different markets at different historical stages.

Female presence at the time of foundation creates a sense of innovation that will characterize the entire history of a small factory based in Novara. Soon her husband Ettore Luigi Maffioli joined Maria Gottfried in running a company named Gottfried Maffioli. The company, now known as a landmark in the maritime market, was born as a subsidiary for the production of tapes in the textile industry.

The interest in finding new solutions meant that immediately after World War II, the company began working with materials that were particularly innovative at the time, such as nylon. The collaboration with Rhodiatoce, then a leader in polyamide fiber production, was a turning point in the company’s history and allowed Gottifredi Maffioli to enter new markets, such as fishing, for which the company developed and launched the first nylon fishing lines on the market.

The new synthetic fiber plays a much bigger role in the history of Gottifredi Maffioli. In 1954, the company developed the first synthetic cables, which had never been produced before, which made a decisive contribution to the success of the Italian expedition, which for the first time in history conquered the top of K2. Since then, the silhouette of a mythical mountain in the Himalayas has become a symbol of the company.

Gottifredi Maffioli Spa has always characterized dissatisfied curiosity and the ability to turn new materials into concrete innovations. In the early 1980s, the company took another great opportunity. Thanks to her first experience of using Kevlar, an innovative Dupont fiber, Gottifredi Maffioli received an order from Azzurra, the first Italian boat to compete in the Copa America, to create innovative racing ropes. It was an entry into the yacht world, the beginning of a history that continues to this day, and which has allowed the company to become a market leader in the sailing industry for the production of ropes and to become a technical benchmark in this field around the world. Rigging of yachts Moro di Venezia, Luna Rossa, Alinghi, BMW Oracle – these are just some of the successes achieved by Gottifredi Maffioli in the world of sailing.

A family passion for research and development of increasingly effective products, as well as open and constructive relationships with customers and suppliers have made Gottifredi Maffioli an ideal partner for new product development. Kevlar, Dyneema, PBO are just some of the innovative fibers used by the company for racing boats.

The company’s Novara plant is an ideal meeting place between basic fiber research and applied innovation. Here, manufacturers of revolutionary materials such as Dupont, DSM, Toyobo and others meet with large teams of the sailing world. Sports success is born here. Gottifredi Maffioli has now become an applied research laboratory that transforms innovation into a finished product and a platform for meeting innovators.
